“When I arrived in the Canadian Prairies from Ukraine, I expected to encounter a completely new visual landscape. Instead, I found a deeply familiar soul. Looking at the geometric traditions of the First Nations—their Star Blankets and sacred motifs—I was struck by an immediate, emotional resonance with the ancient Ukrainian solar symbols, the Kolyada stars, and the sacred geometry of our native sunflower. This piece is my personal tribute to that discovery: a bridge forged in relief between the land that shaped my past and the land that welcomed my present.”
This 3D wall sculpture is a profound visual synthesis of two resilient cultures bound by the Canadian Prairies. When I relocated from Ukraine to Manitoba, I was deeply astonished to discover a striking, natural similarity between traditional Ukrainian solar motifs and the ancient geometric iconography of the First Nations.
In both traditions, these sacred geometric patterns function as a protective shield ( ukr: Oberih / Protective Amulet)—where chevrons symbolize active spiritual defense and ancestral rays, and diamonds represent the fertile earth, resilience, and life. By unifying the structured mathematical rhythm of the sunflower with these protective shapes, the artwork creates a soothing, harmonious presence, serving as an anchor of quiet strength and peace for any space.
Set against a textured, mineral-pigmented background of dusty prairie blue and muted slate, PRAIRIE SKY captures the serene atmosphere of a wide-open sky. The hand-sculpted central Fibonacci spiral glows with rich bronze patinas, framed by a halo of genuine Black Onyx, Tiger’s Eye, Citrine, and Bronzite. Subtle, hand-placed micro-incrustations of raw Kyanite are delicately embedded directly into the blue background, creating a deep, tactile piece that radiates warmth and timeless elegance.
